Wildlife rehabilitation is the treatment and care of injured, orphaned, or sick wild animals so that they can be released back to the wild. Federal law protects most wild birds and state laws additionally protect most other wildlife.
To work with mammals, reptiles and amphibians, wildlife rehabilitators and wildlife rehabilitation centers in Massachusetts must be issued special permits from the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife.
Anyone interested in becoming a licensed wildlife rehabilitator is encouraged to volunteer with an established rehabilitator or wildlife center to gain an understanding of the time and commitment involved.
